Mayan Riviera’s Best Mayan Ruins!

Hundreds of thousands of Mayans occupied much of the southern coast of the Yucatan peninsula (now called the Mayan Riviera) for hundreds of years until they disappeared in the 15th and 16th centuries.  Descendants still can be found and ruins of their villages abound in this area.  Many of the ruins are in excellent condition and well worth seeing.

Within 60 miles of Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Muyil, Coba, and Tulum are three of the best Mayan Ruins in Mexico, and all three are in the area known as the Mayan Riviera.  If you stay in Playa del Carmen, you can easily do day trips to each of the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Muyil
Muyil is located near Tulum, about 60 miles south of Playa del Carmen, in the massive Sian Ka’An Biosphere Reserve.  The Muyil ruins are hidden deep in the jungle, and were more rently discovered.  In the vicinity you’ll see jaguars, anteaters, ocelots, howler monkeys and more.  You need a tour guide to visit.  You are allowed to climg the temple, El Castillo, which is roughly 50 feet high, with very narrow steps designed so one must sidestep their way down, and not be able to turn your back to the temple.  Count on it being hot and better to go earlier in the day.  Nearby is a canal that connects to the Caribbean Sea.

Coba
Coba is the tallest pyramid in the Yucatan, 140 feet high.  You are allowed to climb (not easy!)to the top of Nohoch Mul, and there is a rope to hold onto as you make the climb.  Nearby is a cenote to refresh yourself in.

Tulum
Tulum and Coba are a few miles apart, but Tulum sits above 40-foot-high cliffs on the Caribbean Sea.  El Castillo (yes another El Castillo) is at the edge of the cliff and has a 3 sided wall around the inland side to defend itself agains attacks.
